Ever since I heard of Elephant Rock a few months ago, I've been waiting patiently to see it for myself. The only information I have about it is that it is a big rock in the shape of an elephant :) We decided to drive up to see it on Saturday (it's about an hour north of here) and can only be accessed at low tide. I checked the tide table and 2:30pm was high tide, so I figured if we went around 10am that should give us a few hours out on the beach. Well, I was wrong! When we walked out to the rock at 10am we walked down the beach and over some rocks and in some areas there was ankle deep water to walk through. No problem. There were a few other people checking out the rock and going for a swim. Half an hour later I noticed the tide was noticeably higher and we were the only ones left out at the rock. Getting a little nervous as we didn't want to become stranded, we decided to walk back. Well, that turned out to be a good decision as the ankle deep water had now become almost waist deep! Good thing we weren't wearing pants! The water was fairly warm so it wasn't that bad, but it was definitely an eye-opener as to how fast the tides can change. I guess low tide literally means the lowest tide of the day - which probably was around 8:30am.
Half an hour definitely was not enough time as we didn't get to check out everything we wanted. There was lots of cool caves to explore that we didn't get to see, so that means we will just have to go back!

So cool, can't wait to go back to explore some more. |
There are also some other rock formations around the corner from Elephant Rock. They are named the 'Three Sisters.' There used to be three rock formations in the ocean but from what I've heard, I think the third eroded, so sadly there are only two sisters left. Very cool, nonetheless! Because of the high tide we didn't get to see them up close or see what was around the corner. Next time.
